Fitness & Healthy Weight

No promises on the scales. A real workout every class.

Karate is physical training: techniques practised with speed and power, set patterns that move the whole body, and partner work. We do not promise weight loss or any health result. We can tell you what a class asks of you, and that you can start from wherever you are.

01Starting out

Start where you are

  1. No fitness needed first

You do not need to be fit before you start. Nothing about karate makes it too hard for most adults, whether you trained as a child and stopped or are a complete beginner.

  2. Your own pace

Not everyone learns at the same pace, so classes are taught step by step, with one-to-one help when you need it.

  3. A workout every lesson

Every lesson is a workout, even if you have never been a gym person.

If you have a health condition or an injury, check with your doctor before you start, and tell your instructor so training can be taken at the right pace.

02The workout

What a class asks of your body

Shotokan training is built on kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). Between them, they work the whole body.

How the three parts work together

  • Speed and powerPunches, blocks and kicks are trained with speed and power.
  • Strength and flexibilityBoth are worked on in training. Neither is needed before you start.
  • The whole bodyKata are set patterns of movement in several directions, using everything at once.
  • A partnerKumite is sparring with a fellow club member, at speed and with control.

Will karate help me lose weight?

We do not promise weight loss or any other health result. What we can say is that every class is a physical workout. If weight or health is part of your reason for starting, talk to your doctor as well.

I am not fit. Can I still start?

Yes. You do not need to be fit before you start, and every technique is taught step by step.

Is there a class for my age?

WSKF Australia has six age groups, from Little Tigers at four to adults at 75 and over, on one black belt syllabus. See all age groups.
