05Principles · Eight chapters
Eight principles, taught together.
Every WSKF class teaches more than technique. Four principles shape character and four sharpen attention. Each one has its own chapter, and none of them is learned alone.
01The chapters
One idea per chapter
Each principle page opens with a single line. Read them in order, or start with the one your child, or you, needs most.
Character · 01 to 04
Character
How students treat their instructors, their training partners, their elders and themselves.
- RespectEarned, not a right. Shown to instructors, partners, elders and yourself.
- Self ControlFull speed. Full power. No one hurt. Learning how not to fight.
- Good mannersHow we treat each other, from please and thank you to addressing people correctly.
- Honesty and integrityWhat you do when no one is watching.
Attention · 05 to 08
Attention
How students take in the people around them, the space they train in and the instruction they are given.
- Awareness of othersTrain with people, not around them.
- PerseveranceKeep going. Karate takes years to master and will not happen overnight.
- Develop focusAttention with purpose: one instruction, one goal, one movement.
- Develop listeningListen, understand, apply. To your instructor, your peers and your opponents.
02In every class
Practised on the mat, not lectured.
The principles are practised in training: in how students work with a partner, how they listen and how they keep going when a technique is hard.
Respect rarely stands alone. It depends on self control, and it shows in good manners. That is why the eight are taught together, at every age.
Small habits, practised every class
- Being quiet and patient
- Making quick decisions
- Walking, not running
- Being polite
- Not talking out of turn
