Keep moving. Keep learning.

It is never too late for an adult to start karate. Traditional Shotokan, taught step by step, at a pace that suits you, with something new to learn in almost every class.

01The approach

Three things to know

  1. Start when you are ready

Nothing about karate makes it too hard for most adults to learn. You can start as a complete beginner, or come back to something you did years ago.

  2. Your own pace

Not every adult learns at the same pace. Every move is taught step by step, with one-to-one help when you need it.

  3. Always something new

Karate is a lifelong pursuit. There is something new to learn in almost every class, however long you have trained.

02Technique first

Detail keeps you learning

Shotokan is built on detailed technique: punches, blocks and kicks, then kata, set patterns of movement against opponents from several directions. Every move is detailed, so there is always something to work on.

Good technique asks for balance, coordination and flexibility, so training gives you a reason to keep working on them, at a pace that suits you.

If you have a health condition or an injury, check with your doctor before you start, and tell your instructor so training can be taken at the right pace.

03Belonging

A club that trains together

A club group of adults and teenagers in white gi with coloured and black belts, fists raised, in front of a WSKF banner

WSKF describes itself as a large family that likes to train together. Classes are mostly group practice, with one-to-one help when you need it.

Everyone follows the same black belt syllabus, so what you learn connects with every other age group in the club.

04Progression

One syllabus. No rush.

You work through the same grades as every WSKF student, from your first belt toward black belt, at your own pace.

Gradually you put what you know to the test, and before long you are doing things you could not do when you started.
