Complete fitness

A karate class is a complete body workout, and it provides a variety of mental challenges as well. Shotokan training is built on three parts, and each one asks something of both.

01Three parts

Body and mind, part by part

Kihon, kata and kumite are the three main areas of Shotokan training. Together they are the workout.

  • KihonBasics

    Body
Punches, blocks and kicks, trained with speed and power.
    Mind
Every move is shown in detail, and getting a basic technique right takes attention.
  • KataForms

    Body
Set patterns of movement in several directions, using the whole body.
    Mind
Each pattern is learned in order, and remembered, as practice against opponents from several directions.
  • KumiteSparring

    Body
Sparring with a fellow club member, at speed.
    Mind
Control: moving at high speed and full power without hurting the person in front of you.

02Why it stays complete

Something new in almost every class.

There is something new to learn in almost every class, and each new belt brings a new set of challenges and skills. As you progress, the body and the mind are both asked for more.

You do not need to be fit to begin. Every technique is taught step by step, at your own pace, with one-to-one help when you need it.
