01Challenge

Nothing about karate is too hard for most adults. It still asks a lot.

Most adults can learn karate, including people who have never trained in anything. You might have done some as a child and stopped, or you might be a complete beginner. Either way you start where you are.

Not every adult learns at the same pace, so classes are taught step by step and you get one-to-one help when you need it. There is something new to learn in almost every class.

02Fitness

Every lesson is a workout

Adults often find it harder to make time for fitness. Karate builds it into something you want to turn up for, even if you have never been a gym person.

  • Strength

Techniques are trained with speed and power, building strength and flexibility as you go.

  • Focus

Every move is detailed. Getting it right takes attention, and that attention is part of the training.

  • Self-defence

You learn to defend yourself, but karate is not about aggression. The aim is confidence, and resolving conflict without it becoming physical.

03Skill

Three parts of every karateka's training

Shotokan training is built on three main areas that work together.

  1. A black belt student throwing a high front kick during a class in a sports hall

    Kihon BASICS

The fundamentals: the different types of punches, blocks and kicks that every technique is built on.

  2. A brown belt student holding a guarded stance with both fists raised, looking to the side

    Kata FORMS

Set patterns of movement that practise defending against opponents coming from several directions.

  3. A black belt student in a white gi working a technique against a training partner's arm during a partner drill

    Kumite SPARRING

Sparring with a fellow club member, putting what you learn in kihon and kata into practice, with control.

04Questions

First-timer questions

I have never done any martial art. Can I start?

Yes. Adults with no experience at all start karate, and every technique is taught step by step.

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. You start where you are, and every lesson is a workout. If you have a health condition or injury, check with your doctor first and tell your instructor.

I trained as a child and stopped. Can I come back?

Yes. Adults who trained as children and stopped are welcome to start again. Tell the club about your earlier training when you enquire.

Will I train only with people in their twenties?
