02Why it takes years
A black belt is a long goal, met one belt at a time.
Karate takes years to master and does not happen overnight. Each new belt brings new challenges, and the belt system breaks one long goal into smaller ones, so students see the results of their own hard work along the way.
The instructors on this page have taken those steps themselves. Now they help newer students take them too.
03Choosing a club
How to check an instructor's grade
Reputable martial arts organisations can confirm who their members are and whether they are registered. It is a fair question to ask anywhere you train.
Ask to see it
Ask the instructor to show you their rank certificate.
Keep a copy
Ask for a copy of the certificate to keep.
Confirm it
Contact the organisation named on the certificate to confirm the instructor's identity and grade.
