01Where it started

Rugby, soccer, hockey, basketball, cricket. Then one martial art.

Before karate, Grant played a variety of sports. When he arrived in Perth from Christchurch in 1983, he chose Shotokan for its focus on the whole body, mental as well as physical, and for self-defence.

He trained with Shotokan Karate International Australia under Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa, earned his black belt in 1987, and in 1988 started teaching at his first club.

In 1998 he joined the World Shotokan Karate-do Federation to train under its founder and Chief Instructor, Sensei Hitoshi Kasuya, who remains an important influence on Grant and his clubs. In 2009 he made Shotokan his full-time work, to develop quality karate in Perth.

04How he teaches

Learning to fight, and learning not to

Grant teaches students how to fight, and, more importantly, how not to. As parents and students come to realise, the real value of Shotokan is not just the fighting and self-defence. It is a strong work ethic, good morals, principles, self-control and respect.

Children are taught to respect their elders and others in the Japanese way. These are the qualities Grant values in training:

  • Humility
  • Patience
  • Persistence
  • Determination
  • Understanding
  • Perceptiveness

Teaching with Sheela

Grant runs the club with his wife, Sheela Rollinson, 3rd Dan. Many of the club's assistant instructors have trained under him from their earliest beginnings and now teach as black belts themselves.

Principles behind the training

Respect, self control and perseverance are among the qualities Grant teaches. Each one has its own chapter.
