01Who it is for

Ready for more than the basics

Juniors is for primary school-aged children from eight to twelve, with the personal attention each student needs.

  1. A

    Moving up from Little Tigers

Juniors is the natural next step. The same syllabus continues, and classes go into more depth on the skills of Shotokan karate and its history.

  2. B

Starting fresh at eight or older

No earlier karate is needed. Children joining for the first time are welcome, including those who are a little timid to begin with.

02The Juniors pathway

Skills, then confidence, then progression

  1. Skills

Stronger technical foundations. Overall body strength, balance, coordination, flexibility and agility, trained in more detail than in Little Tigers.

  2. Confidence

Focus, attitude and listening. Juniors learn to be open-minded, aware of others and their surroundings, and to lead as well as follow when it is asked of them.

  3. Progression

Expectations rise with skill. There is usually a noticeable jump in ability at this age, and what is asked of each student grows with it, ready for Teens at thirteen.

03Training with others

Partner work, with control

Juniors put a much greater focus on working with others: listening, focusing and staying aware of a partner and of everyone around them.

Karate teaches students to move at speed without hurting the person in front of them. That control is how they learn to respect each other and themselves.

04Etiquette and leadership

Lead when it is your turn. Follow when it is not.

Juniors are taught smart thinking and common sense, and how to be a leader and a follower when each is needed.

Dojo etiquette, good manners and awareness of others are part of every class, alongside the karate itself.
