Real training standards

Training is demanding and fast-paced, and there is something new to learn in every class. Every move is shown in detail and taken step by step, with help until you are confident.

It asks a lot physically and mentally: the full range of techniques, the knowledge behind them, and the attitude and focus needed to do them well.

02What changes at thirteen

More is expected, and more is possible

  • Discipline

As you get better, you are challenged a little more. Knowledge and experience are put to the test a little more each time.

  • Independence

Training covers personal standards, ethics, role modelling and smart thinking, with one-to-one help when you need it.

  • Confidence

Before long you are doing things you could not do when you started, and you know it.

03Confidence and community

Train alongside your peers

Not everyone in class will be your age, but many will be. You learn and refine technique together, and training partners often become good friends.

Self-defence is part of Shotokan, but the aim is that the strongest do not need to fight at all. The focus is on respect, resolving conflict and self-confidence.

04The path ahead
