Develop listening

Listen, understand, apply. You don’t just want to be heard, you want to be listened to. In the dojo, listening is practised every class.

01In training

Listen, understand, apply

Listening in karate is an exchange with other people: your instructor, your peers and your opponents.

  1. Step 01

    Listen

Students listen to their instructor so they can keep up with the demanding pace of the class. Being quiet and not talking out of turn is part of it.

  2. Step 02

    Understand

Information comes a piece at a time, never too much at once, with one-to-one guidance when a student needs it.

  3. Step 03

    Apply

Then it is put into practice with your peers and opponents, who you also need to listen to.

02At WSKF

Not just heard. Listened to.

Listening, and active listening, are key to communication. In karate, listening grows out of the respect that is part of training. WSKF values active and attentive listening, and listening skills are taught from the youngest classes up.
