  1. Early 1920s

The Okinawan master Funakoshi Gichin introduced karate to Japan after a demonstration for the Tokyo Department of Education. The style he taught takes its name from Shoto, his pen name.

After the Second World War, Shotokan grew in popularity across the Western world. Funakoshi kept teaching until his death in 1958.

  3. The JKA

    The Japan Karate Association

The JKA became the most influential Shotokan organisation. Many of the mainstream Shotokan organisations grew from it, the World Shotokan Karate-do Federation among them.
